On September 12, 2026, Columbia County’s Scouting America SWAT club hosted a meaningful community litter cleanup at Montgomery Park. Demonstrating a shared commitment to community service and environmental health, seven dedicated SWAT youth participants joined forces with two active community members. Together, the group worked diligently to clean up approximately ten pounds of trash from the park grounds, immediately improving the local environment for everyone who visits.

During the cleanup event, the group took some time to discuss how tobacco products negatively affect the environment. Cigarette butts and tobacco waste are among the most frequently littered items globally, leaking toxic chemicals into the soil and water systems while posing a direct threat to local wildlife. This educational discussion allowed the youth to connect their physical cleanup efforts to the broader impact of tobacco pollution on ecosystems.

The visible presence of the SWAT club, combined with their active cleanup and group discussion, caught the attention of park visitors. One family was provoked to inquire about SWAT and what they were doing. This curiosity provided an excellent opportunity for the youth to discuss SWAT’s mission of working toward a tobacco-free future. The members shared details about their advocacy efforts and explained how the family could become actively involved in supporting the cause.

The successful event highlights SWAT’s ongoing dedication to building healthier, tobacco-free environments for everyone in the county. By blending environmental action with community outreach, the Columbia County Scout SWAT club demonstrated that local youth can drive meaningful change. Their efforts not only left Montgomery Park cleaner but also planted the seeds for future community involvement in the movement against tobacco.
